The facts about gum disease

Gum Disease

It’s not a pretty picture. According to the American Dental Association, three-quarters of all adults will be affected by some form of gum disease. In the Troy area, you can turn to Dr. Mary Berk-Mooney of Troy Dental Care as your resource in the prevention and treatment of gum disease.

Gum disease, technically referred to as “periodontal disease,” is a bacterial infection in the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. There are several stages and categories. The first stage is called “gingivitis” and is characterized by gum tissue that is red, puffy, and bleeds easily during brushing and flossing.

The next several categories include advancing stages of periodontal disease. In these stages, the infection can destroy the bone supporting the teeth, eventually causing tooth loss. But when you visit Troy Dental Care regularly, we can help you avoid gum disease and its destructive results. And if you’re diagnosed with periodontal disease, Dr. Berk-Mooney and his experienced team can affectively treat the disease, using the latest technologies to return your mouth to health.

Don't Forget to Floss!

Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Decay-causing bacteria can hid between teeth where toothbrush bristles can't reach. Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles from between teeth and under the gum line.

Visit Our Office Regularly!

Take good care of your smile. Remember to visit the dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.

Mouthwash Is Important, Too!

Brushing and flossing may not be enough. The ADA now recommends using a non-alcohol, antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce plaque and prevent gingivitis.
